Colic, a common condition that affects up to 25% of all infants (1).

Colic is defined as episodes of intense, persistent crying or fussiness in an otherwise healthy infant. It typically begins within the first few weeks of life and can last for several months. While the exact cause of colic is unknown, it is believed to be related to the infant's immature digestive system, overstimulation, or sensitivity to certain foods in the mother's diet (2).

As a new mom, I was constantly worried that Sunny was feeling things that she couldn’t express to me. Every step I took from the moment she was born revolved around me reminding myself how I would feel in her position, and ways I’ve found to alleviate discomfort over my years of experience.

On postpartum nights that Sunny seemed to be uncomfortable, or overstimulated, a cup of chamomile tea would help not only me, but trickle into my breastmilk and soothe her as well. When a girl friend told me she was experiencing colic with her newborn, I immediately recommended German Chamomile tea and it worked like a charm.

In my personal opinion it’s wild how adapted to pills and opinions we as a society have become. Call me a barefoot hippie, but what ever happened to the medicine cabinet that was supplemented with herbs from the garden? Have we lost our way? Maybe, but it’s not too late to learn new things everyday.

Herbal Remedies:

  1. Chamomile: Chamomile tea is a popular herbal remedy for colic, as it has a calming effect on the digestive system. It can be given to an infant in small amounts, either directly or added to breast milk or formula (5).
  2. Fennel: Fennel tea has been shown to reduce colic symptoms by relieving gas and bloating. It can be given to an infant in small amounts, either directly or added to breast milk or formula (6).
  3. Lemon Balm: Lemon balm has a calming effect on the nervous system and can help reduce colic symptoms. It can be given to an infant in small amounts, either directly or added to breast milk or formula (7).
  4. Peppermint: Peppermint oil has been shown to relieve symptoms of colic by relaxing the intestinal muscles. However, it should be used with caution, as it can cause heartburn in some infants (8).

Keep in mind, holistic and herbal remedies can provide a gentle and natural approach to soothing colic in infants. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider before trying any new treatment. By working together, parents and healthcare providers can develop a plan to help alleviate colic symptoms and promote a happier, healthier babies.
